Amberg Structural Deformation is a powerful office software for analysing and reporting deformations in segmental tunnel linings, with a particular focus on ovality (out-of-roundness).
The module simplifies ovality assessment from as-built profiles, supporting both laser scanning and total station workflows. It performs ovalisation assessments in accordance with International Tunnelling Association (ITA) guidelines and can be used as a standalone tool or integrated with Amberg Profile and Tunnelscan for a complete tunnel solution.
Module Overview
Amberg Structural Deformation provides tools for aligning with design specifications and supporting ongoing maintenance needs. Key functionalities include:

Amberg Structural Deformation
Simplifying ovality assessment of TBM segmental rings.
Stay ahead in tunnel projects with Amberg Structural Deformation – your trusted partner for precise ovality analysis and beyond.
Precise analysis of TBM segmental ring deformations, to confirm as-constructed tolerances and track structural integrity from construction through the tunnel's life cycle.
A circular design shape made of arcs with the same radius. Without it, the ovalisation analysis yields no results.
The restriction prevents fitting the wrong shape, for example a ventilation tube inside the TBM tunnel.
It automatically removes non-lining points such as brackets and cables before the geometric calculations, so results reflect the tunnel wall only.
Five methods, selected in the analysis settings under Ovality calculation.
| Method | Based on | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Standard ovality formula | Maximum and minimum measured internal diameters, relative to the design diameter | % or ‰ |
| ITA max-min percentage | Largest deviation from the design diameter, whether expansion or compression | % or ‰, positive or negative |
| Ellipse-based ovality | Major and minor axes of the best-fit ellipse, relative to the design diameter | % or ‰ |
| Maximum diameter difference | Largest deviation from the design diameter, expansion or compression | Absolute distance (offset units) |
| Ovalisation (BTS 4th ed.) | Maximum and minimum internal diameters, per the British Tunnelling Society specification; added in 2.28 | % or ‰ |
Horizontal, vertical and both diagonals (+45° and −45°), from the best-fit centre to best-fit sectors. A second option measures horizontal and vertical dimensions through the design axis.
It is the centre of the best-fit circle or ellipse. It can be used to calculate an as-built axis.
Point clouds are not analysed directly: they are sliced into profiles at regular intervals while importing into the Measured profiles editor. Supported point cloud sources:
For LAS and E57 files, the file units can be set to meter, ft (US) or ft (Int).
Profile data (not point clouds) can also come from Navigator Tablet sync, Amberg Applications or ASCII profile files.
With "Highlight value above": profiles whose ovality exceeds the limit are coloured in the profile navigator, the Overall table and the PDF report. Ovality can be shown in % or ‰.
PDF reports, 2D and 3D DXF, and text reports. Charts can also be saved or copied as images via right-click.
